The Importance of Moral Education There is a special need today for evolving a new system of education in India which must be in tune with our major values of national tradition and integration. Morality prepares the way for the perpetuation of religious beliefs while religion reinforces morality with its supernatural sanctions.
Many social scientists even hold the view that religion ought to divest itself as much as possible of dogma and supernaturalism and concern itself with the promotion of moral values. The belief that they came from God gave them greater binding power.
It should not be forgotten that no deception on the part of the grown-ups go unnoticed by their children, because children are good observers. Social ethics and moral values have been deteriorating over time.
Thus practices allowed by religion may not be allowed by morality. Humans have lost patience and have become selfish in their motives and hence ethics and morals have declined and lost value in their lives. Broadly morality means honesty of character, fairness in attitude, absence of evils like hatred, jealously, greed, telling lies, etc.
Ethics can also be defined as the manual defining the code of morals. Morality conflicts with religionism, not religion. Moral codes have prepared the way for the perpetuation of religious beliefs.
Despite the phenomenal increase in the number of educational institutions, there has been a deterioration of human values in our society. Beforeeducation was the exclusive responsibility of the states. A nation cannot make progress if it has lost its character.
Similarly man killing or human sacrifice cannot be held morally right. Sometimes religion inspires conduct detrimental to social interests. As a result, the numbers of crimes like murders, thefts, gang rapes, kidnaps, molestation, incidents of snatch and run and illegal practices like terrorism, hoarding, drug abuse etc.
The conduct exhibited by the person in personal-social behaviors gives a correct evaluation of his morals. It is a fact that today the educational system has failed to inculcate in young people moral values. Bribery has become a common feature of our public life we have to start form the grassroots level to impart moral education to our children.
