The only thing keeping him from disintegrating entirely is Claire, his wife, whom he meets when she is 20 and he is 28 though when Claire first meets Henry she is 6 and he is I hear Henry whistling as he comes up the path through the garden, into the studio.
When he leaves, where he goes, or how long his trips will last are all beyond his control. When year-old Clare meets year-old Henry at the Newberry Library in at the opening of the novel, he has never seen her before, although she has known him most of her life.
Henry DeTamble is a time traveler, although not by choice. Sex A couple gets in bed a few times and is shown passionately kissing and caressing each other; they later appear below the sheets with their shoulders bared -- when she gets out of bed, you see her naked from the rear including buttocks.
The central couple shares a powerful love, but their relationship is constantly tested, sometimes to the breaking point, and there are few moments of levity. She is waiting for Henry, as she has done most of her life.
Niffenegger makes Henry a very complex character; while sometimes he comes off a little unlikeable certainly so to some of the people around himhe is always sympathetic. Henry cannot take anything with him into the future or the past; he always arrives naked and then struggles to find clothing, shelter, and food.

Because she builds this scaffolding of domesticity, what you remember is the realism as well as the fantasy, and through much of the book the time travel works to enhance the reality rather than take over from it.
This is far from a science fiction exploration of the space-time continuum, but a heartfelt love story of two people who must live with this curse as part of their lives. Their story is intricate and fascinating; we learn early on that the two will eventually get married, so it is a matter of learning how they came to that point, their love growing and changing, painful and filled with absence and longing.
Niffenegger does an admirable job portraying their life together, and exploring a love built over a lifetime that courses deep through both of them.
The book skips back and forth between the point-of-view of the title character and the time-traveler himself, but there is absolutely no difference in their voices. Stay up to date on new reviews. At this point, she knew parts of his future that he did not.

I really enjoyed this book; it managed to capture the helplessness of love in a passionate way. Young lovers often believe themselves crossed by fate or by time, but those in Niffenegger’s spirited first novel have more reason than most.
