Writing a bio for poetry submissions

More publications are beginning to accept submissions only through online submission forms. Note that these are not absolutes, and that we make editorial judgements on a case-by case basis.

Some publications explicitly forbid simultaneous submissions. For prose writers, this would normally mean writers who have not yet published a first novel or collection of short fiction will be given priority.

Some do not consider previously published work. Some set page limits or limits on the number of poems per submission.


We cannot consider anything that has been previously published or accepted for publication, anywhere, in any form. Writing the poems is the natural part of submitting. However, you do want to make sure you actually study each publication before submitting. Actually, all the cover letter really does is prep the editor for the submission.

We do ask, however, that you refrain from multiple submissions, and that you limit your submissions to our journal to once per issue.

You may also consider mentioning any work previously published by the magazine that you admire, to show that you are familiar with the magazine to which you are submitting your writing.

We encourage quality in submissions over quantity, and we appreciate the time you take to ensure that your work is at its best before you submit it.
