Sometimes the thesis is the first sentence, but more often it is the final sentence of the first paragraph. Writing conclusions is, in part, a matter of finding the proper balance. Use MLA-style in-text citations and a Works Cited list to credit your sources for all material you quote, paraphrase, or summarize.
When in doubt, use a dictionary!
Explore different ways to organize the information depending on what you find or what you want to demonstrate see above. If so, where and how might it be fixed? Be sure that each paragraph: Each of the academic disciplines has its own way of constructing knowledge, of organizing that knowledge, of using evidence, and of communicating within the field.

Frequently writers of background synthesis papers develop a thesis before they have finished. Do you really want to aim a remark directly at the reader? When you are writing papers in college, you will require structures that will support ideas that are more complex than the ones you considered in high school.
Having read and considered sources A, B, and C, can you infer something else - D not a source, but your own idea? It follows that the better able you are to discover such relationships, the better able you will be to use your sources in writing syntheses.
What do I know about the context of my topic? Its main virtue is that it at least grounds your paper in relevant and specific evidence. In an academic synthesis, you make explicit the relationships that you have inferred among separate sources.
For example, overusing the "I" might make the reader feel that your paper is overly subjective. Represents the texts fairly--even if that seems to weaken the paper!
Be flexible with your plan, however, and allow yourself room to incorporate new ideas you discover as you write. The purpose in writing an explanatory essay is not to argue a particular point, but rather to present the facts in a reasonably objective manner.
Does your question address both text and context? The purpose of an argument synthesis is for you to present your own point of view - supported, of course, by relevant facts, drawn from sources, and presented in a logical manner. To whom are you writing, and for what purpose?
ASU provides additional instruction for educators interested in using this particular model for synthesis. In the event you are given a topic in class to write about, you can skip this step all together, though you should still begin to think about from what point-of-view you will be writing from.
